b. Halogen Light Info

Halogen lamps are improved mini incandescent lamps. They come in capsule (mini bulb) or mini tube shape. Some capsules are placed in reflector lamp heads, or in an outer Edison bulb to function as standard incandescent bulbs.

- Clear halogen lamps can be quite glaring so best used in shaded or enclosed fixtures or, if directional, directed away from eyes and from TV or computer screens.

- Halogen lamps can get very hot and should be placed out of reach from children and pets.

- Some people with light-sensitive skin conditions or migraine may be sensitive to halogen light.

Halogen Lightbulb Models

Halogen Conversion Kits

Conversion kits are build-your-own-lightbulb-systems where you choose the base type + inner lamp type + outer bulb shape and colour you want, and then only replace the inner bulb when it burns out. The inner lamp is a capsule mini bulb with a G9 base.

Note:

These are examples of the most common models. Other variations of 12V reflector lamps and outer bulbs for combination lamps exist.

• Touching halogen mini bulbs or tubes and with bare fingers during bulb replacement may shorten lamp life due to sodium salts on the skin leaving residue which reacts chemically with the special quartz glass. Use a lamp switching tool, rubber gloves or a clean piece of tissue, plastic or foam. If touched accidentally, wipe clean with alcohol.

• Reflector lamps with replaceable mini bulbs must have a front glass and need a good distance from anything remotely flammable (check light fitting or lamp label for precise instructions) and from plants, which may dry out or even get singed from the heat.

• Dicroic reflector lamps channel some of the heat backwards instead of forwards, and must only be used in well-ventilated fixtures (e.g. such as track spotlights, not in enclosed downlights).

Built-in halogen downlights or spotlights must be installed by a professional electrician. If you do it yourself and it overheats and causes a fire, your home insurance may not cover it.

• Halogen lamps are mercury-free but should be recycled anyway. Do not throw in glass recycling bin!
